Lacey became interested in dog mushing when her second grade teacher introduced the IditaRead program. Each student chose a dog musher on the Iditarod—a 1,100 mile dog sled race in Alaska—and read one page for every mile their musher raced, attempting to beat him or her to the finish line.
By the end of the program Lacey was hooked on dog mushing. She announced to her parents that she wished to become a dog musher, to which they replied, “No.”
A deal was struck with her parents and after almost a year of waiting, she adopted her first sled dog. Shortly thereafter, she found an ad in the local paper advertising a team of 8 sled dogs. She contacted the owner and ended up striking a deal for 17 dogs and the needed harnesses, dog houses, sleds, and equipment. Being too young to run the Iditarod, Lacey set her sights on the Junior Iditarod, a 180 mile race for teens 14-17.
Dog Girl follows Lacey along on her journeys and misadventures as she learns what it means to be a musher and how to race and train sled dogs. Lacey shares some of her real-life experiences including losing her dog team after falling off her sled in the Absaroka Wilderness of Montana, to being run over by her own sled and dragged for miles in her first dog sled race.
The story culminates with Lacey running the Junior Iditarod at age fifteen, and winning the Humanitarian Award for best cared for dog team.
This is an inspirational read for children and adults everywhere.

I love this book on so many levels. I have a fascination with Alaska, so I picked this book up because of the dog sledding aspect. I wanted to learn more about it, and find out what drives a person to take up such a difficult, specialized sport. I got much more than that. Lacey is an amazing young woman, who at the youngest of ages realized what she wanted and worked non-stop to achieve her goal. This is also a story about family, because her parents embraced her passion and aided her in working to fulfill her dreams. And then there is community, the dog sledding community saw that Lacey was serious about her quest to learn the skills needed to become a competitive racer, and they helped her too. It's an amazing achievement, and this book opened my eyes to how much work and sacrifice it takes to become a musher. Highly recommended.Product details

Dog Girl edition by Lacey Hart Crafts Hobbies Home eBooks Reviews
Really enjoying reading this book, recommend it highly! I don't want it to end, just hope Lacey writes another book about her adventures on the trail and running Iditarod! Thanks Lacey!
At first I thought it was a kids book but the more I read the more I saw it was a book about the growth of a girl to a woman. Really injoyed it.
This is a great story about how an inspiration or activity from a teacher can lead to the beginning of a dream. It is also the story of the ups and downs of then persuing the dream. One will learn some behind the scenes aspects of the world of dog sledding and competetive dog sledding. I recommend this book for dog lovers and dog sport enthusiasts of all ages.
Even if you do not run dogs with scooters, sulkies or rigs, you will find Lacey Hart's book fun and fascinating to read. So many parts are universally appealing. For example, her grade school has a special section using the Iditarod race to promote reading and general learning. The consequences of that educational decision, flow through the whole book. Lacey's parents accept and encourage their daughter's interest and those parenting skills also flow through the book. And then there is the detail with which Lacey describes the training and running of her sled dogs. This is a great adventure story of a girl with a passion that carries her from Montana to Alaska from eight years old to fifteen and to running the Junior Iditarod (a two day overnight race of close to 200 miles). Lacey completes the race and wins the award for best dog care of all the racers in the race. Buy this book.
The story of a young girl who had a dream to run a team on the longest sled dog race, the prestigious Iditarod. Through perseveranceups and downs, she realized her dream. An inspiring story.
This is a very remarkable story. Lacey Hart is introduced to mushing and the Iditarod while in the 3rd grade. She asks her parents if she can have a dog team and, after reflection, they tell her maybe after a year - evidently to make sure this is not just a passing fancy. The year passes and Lacey is soon provided with an entire dog team along with sleds, harnesses, ganglines, dog houses, the whole shebang.
One thing I noticed that stood out - while her folks provide personal and a lot of the financial and logistics support, this is all Lacey's project - she's the musher in the family and she's allowed to "sink or swim" on her own.
Most of the book is a very honest no-holds-barred account of Hart training herself (seems distance prevents her from getting a mentor) and putting together a competitive dog team. She has enough disasters that would make a lot of people throw in the towel, but Hart hangs in there and in a few years finds herself running the Junior Iditarod.
Believe mushers of all stripes (including armchair ones) will enjoy this book.
